Quartz Rochon polarizers are used with ultraviolet wavelength laser sources. In the Rochon design, one polarization is deviated through an angle and the other polarization component remains undeviated.

Wollaston prisms deviate both polarization components in opposite directions from one another. Cemented calcite Wollaston prisms can have differential deviations in the neighborhood of 20°, and the angular deviations are wavelength dependent. Quartz Wollaston prisms, made with small prism angles, act like variable retardation plates.(see picture in Birefringent Optics section).
